Charles Brown – Charlotte Craftsman & General Contractor
The roots of the Charlotte Remodeling Company began in 1978 when wood craftsman apprentice and Charlotte native Charles Brown, started building cabinets and remodeling homes under the eye of a master craftsman.
Early on, Charlie had a keen interest in replicating and rebuilding the unique architectural style of Craftsman-Style Bungalows found across our Charlotte area. He focused his studies and craftsman skills on learning how the architects and builders used the cedar shakes, copper finishes, and the unique stone and wood complements to shape this building style.
After completing his apprenticeship, Charlie started his own remodeling and additions company focusing on renovations of master bedrooms and baths — and eventually growing into major kitchen remodels, attic and basement remodels, and outdoor living area construction.
“Through the 1980’s, I remodeled so many homes that I could stand in front of a home with a homeowner and tell them exactly how their house was laid out, without even seeing the inside!” said Charles Brown. “The Craftsman-style of Bungalow was so widely popular here around Charlotte, and still is today, because homeowners like the various textures and contrasts and unique finishes and fixtures of this particular architecture.”
As time passes each decade, there are more and more of these homes that homeowners are purchasing and want to build additions that mirror this unique architecture and style. “Today, we’re still remodeling and building additions with the same period architecture and design,” says Brown. “I’m very proud to be working in our neighborhoods like Myers Park and Dilworth that preserve these great Craftsman-style homes.”
Outdoor living areas became an increasingly popular addition for many homeowners, and Charlie led the Charlotte Remodeling Company in embracing the philosophy of extending each home’s architecture into the outdoor space as well, including custom Pergolas, Gazebos, Outdoor Kitchens, Screened Living Spaces, Sunrooms, in any combination of design and style!
Keeping pace with the remodeling and building industry, Charlie and the Charlotte Remodeling Company have incorporated “green” building products, materials and processes into the company practices. A big part of the remodeling and addition process is the replacement of outdated windows with energy-efficient windows that lower household operating costs, while keeping architectural style intact. “We also work with our remodeling customers on replacement doors, air-conditioning units, appliances and any interior fixture that can have a positive impact on the environment and household operating costs,” added Brown. Sometimes energy related income tax rebates will sweeten this deal for customers.
It’s been 32 years since Charles Brown began his journey in becoming a Master Craftsman and Carpentry Expert. Today, he still remodels, renovates and builds new additions to homes of all architectural styles and designs. He employs only the area’s best craftsmen, masons, artisans, period architecture journeymen, and trade professionals.
“I still have the fondness of the Craftsman-style Bungalows,” says Brown. “But every remodel or addition project is exciting because the homeowners are building their dreams, and I enjoy the process of building custom work and helping them realize their dreams, too.”
